How to Remove Your Location from Photos Before You Share Them

ยท 2 min read

When you take a photo with your phone, it doesn't just save the picture. It also writes hidden information into the file called EXIF data: the phone model, the date and time, camera settings and, very often, the exact GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken.

That means an ordinary photo of your living room or your car outside your house can reveal your address to anyone who knows how to read that data โ€” and it takes no technical skill at all.

What information is hidden in your photos?

Don't Facebook and WhatsApp remove it already?

Most big social networks strip a lot of metadata when you post a photo the normal way. The real risk is in other situations that are very common:

In all of these cases the photo arrives untouched โ€” along with your location.

How to check whether a photo contains your location

Open the Remove EXIF Data tool and drop your photo in. It lists every piece of metadata found and, if there is a GPS position, shows a clear warning with a link to the map. Everything runs in your browser โ€” the image is never uploaded to a server.

How to remove the location and all hidden data

  1. Open the EXIF remover.
  2. Drop one photo or a whole batch.
  3. Click "Remove all metadata".
  4. Download the clean photos and use them instead of the originals.

For JPG files the data is removed without re-compressing the image, so quality stays exactly the same. We only keep the orientation tag so your photo doesn't appear sideways.

Stop it at the source

Remember that older photos already on your phone still carry the location, so clean them before sharing.

The bottom line

Privacy lives in the small details. Before you send a photo to a stranger or post it in a listing, take ten seconds to wipe its hidden data.
