How to Send a Large Video on WhatsApp Without Ruining the Quality
Sent a great video to your family and it arrived blurry and washed out? Or WhatsApp told you the file is too big? That's because WhatsApp compresses videos heavily to save data and storage. Fortunately, the fixes are simple.
Method 1: turn on HD quality
In recent versions of WhatsApp, an HD button appears at the top when you pick a video. Turn it on before sending and the video goes out in much better quality β though it's still slightly compressed.
Method 2: send it as a document
This is the best way to keep 100% of the original quality:
- In the chat, tap the paperclip π.
- Choose Document instead of "Photos & videos".
- Pick the video and send it.
The file arrives exactly as it is, with no compression, and WhatsApp accepts very large documents. The only downside is that the recipient has to download it before watching.
Method 3: compress it yourself β the smart way
Instead of letting WhatsApp crush your video, compress it with better settings. The Compress Video tool shrinks the file a lot while keeping it sharp:
- For WhatsApp: choose "Medium" compression and 720p. The file often drops to a quarter of its size or less, and it looks great on a phone.
- For very long videos: choose "Strong" and 480p.
Processing happens in your browser, so the video is never uploaded to a server β which matters for family and private videos.
Method 4: keep only the part that matters
We often send several minutes when the important bit is 20 seconds. Use Trim Video to keep just that moment; in fast mode there's zero quality loss and the file gets much smaller.
Video won't play for the recipient?
Some formats, like iPhone MOV files or MKV, don't play on every phone. Convert them to MP4 with Convert Video before sending β MP4 plays everywhere.
Which method should you use?
- Want the full original quality β send as a document.
- Want it to play right in the chat β compress to 720p, then send with HD.
- Long video where only one part matters β trim it first.
